A Quick (and humorous) Note From the Company Founders -- Bill and Cyndi Daves

Wondering What Life Is Like For 2 Transplanted Floridians?

As the founders, owners and brokers of Foxfire Realty Group, we are Florida natives that have resided in the Murphy area for several years. At times it truly seems as if most of the Florida Natives followed us up here. It's not surprising, though as several historical markers around Murphy tell the story of how Desoto passed very near here on his trip to Florida sometime during the 1540's. Imagine that.

What we have found here is, well, sort of a panacea. Although there are times when we miss the sweet smell of saltwater (at high tide, not at low tide!), we have come to love the mountains and the way of life that is so prevalent here. In addition, our staff, each and everyone of them, has either lived in or has family in the Sunshine State. We really know what the transition is like for folks to totally pull up roots and make Murphy their new home.

What do we not miss? The same exact things that our Florida friends don't miss - traffic and the prevailing congestion, excessive noise levels, and, most importantly, high crime rates. It would be misleading to say that Murphy does not have crime. Murphy does have crime. In fact, our weekly newspaper, The Scout, publishes the name(s) of each and every person arrested during the previous week, with most types described as being of a domestic nature. Crimes that result in fatalities occur less than a dozen times per year. Compare that figure to those in your town, and we're fairly certain that Murphy's crime rate pales in comparison.

But, How's The Weather?

It took us only a year or so to become accustomed to the four succinct changes in seasons. The winter, in actuality, is quite possibly the most beautiful of all the seasons. (Remember -our blood is still thinned by a tad bit of saltwater, so the scenery must really be something!)

Spring officially arrives when the school kids decide it's time to go swimming in one of our great mountain lakes - Lake Appalachia, Nantahala Lake, or Lake Hiawassee. The arrival of the Dogwood blooms, gazillions upon gazillions of bulbs that burst from their winter hiding grounds seeking the sun's light, the vibrant rhododendrons (it's a plant), mountain laurel, and the ever gorgeous and hard to find Flaming Azalea, also known as the Wild Azalea, all mark the arrival of Hummingbird season AND spring.

Summer arrives sometime around June, give or take a few weeks. Summer brings with it many "wonderous"things, but never the choking humidity. Tis' the season when the lines at Wal-Mart are a tad shorter as fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, hiking, and sightseeing are usually in full swing by now. Did we mention that the humidity never made it to town?

Fall is best described as everyones' favorite time of the year. The nights are cool and very comfortable, with daytime highs that seldom exceed 70 degrees. Fall is possibly the most celebrated season, with the ushering in of the changing of colors. It truly is a spectacular event; a natural beauty surpassed by few others. It is hard to believe that leaves can be so beautiful. Folks that drive for days to reach Murphy in order to witness this miracle actually have a nickname - "leaflookers". Historically, we all know that leaflookers eventually turn into "homeowners". And that's okay, really. Seriously, it's okay. We like it that way.

Winter is the time of the year when every granule of soil is visible to the naked eye. Mountainside homes, usually hidden behind the dense growth of the forests, are now reason to stop and gawk. Sixty percent of the county is owned by the United States Forestry Service, so there are alot of trees behind which to hide.

The annual snowfall (yes! It snows!) averages eleven inches PER YEAR. It never hangs around much; certainly never long enough to collect dirt and stuff that has a tendency to make snow "dirty and ugly". It's always clean snow, and that's the way we like it! As far as bitter cold, well, we don't have it. Sorry. This past winter of 2001, we had only a handful of nights that dipped below the twenty degree mark. Winter settles in around the middle of December, and is on the way out come early March. Like we said, we hate to see it go!

We Love What We Do

If we sound a little punchy, there's a reason for it. We truly love what we do. We show homes and land in an environment that is very much in contrast to showing property in the "big city."

Of course, we always get excited when someone comes into our office and says "we would like to do a driveby. "Take 2 flare guns, lots of water, a loaf of bread and 6 cans of tuna fish. But always remember to always, always hang the tuna fish high in the tree as the bears love that stuff, and please let us know what you think of that house!"

The End.

Whether you're looking for a vacation home, a log cabin, lakefront or lake view property, a small or large tract of land, commercial or investment opportunities, or just to visit our great town for a mountain vacation, give us a call. We guarantee one thing - whatever it is we do for you, it will be Simply Better than what you have ever experienced from a real estate company.

Respectfully
