Lake Chatuge is a TVA operated lake
located near Hiawassee, Georgia and Hayesville, North Carolina.
Approximately ½ of the lake is located in Georgia and ½ in North
Carolina. Lake Chatuge was built in 1941 and completed in 1942 with
the main source of water being the Hiawassee River. Lake Chatuge
has 130 miles of shoreline, at full pool, it is approximately 7,200
surface acres in size and is 1,927 feet above sea level. The water
level fluctuates approximately nine feet in a normal year.
Lake Chatuge offers many recreational activities
including swimming, boating, skiing, and fishing. Lake Chatuge has
great fishing for largemouth and spotted bass as well as several
other species. Chatuge is the home of the Georgia State Record Hybrid
which weighed over 25 pounds.
In addition to recreational activities, Lake Chatuge
serves a number of other purposes including flood control, power
generation, and augmentation of water flows for navigation downstream.
